NxGV CHALLENGE

NEXT GENERATION VEHICLE CHALLENGE

Hybrid Electric Vehicle · Electric Vehicle · Driverless Vehicle

March 2026 - May 2027 PROTON Centre of Excellence, Shah Alam

About the Event

NxGV Challenge 2026-2027 is a national next-generation vehicle competition spanning three categories: Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Electric Vehicle (EV), and Driverless Vehicle (DV), organized in collaboration with industry partners and hosted at the PROTON Centre of Excellence, Shah Alam.

In the Driverless category, teams progress through a structured, multi-stage journey beginning with RC-based autonomous vehicle development, followed by workshops and simulation training using tools such as ROS and digital twin environments, culminating in a hybrid go-kart driverless challenge. The HEV category challenges teams to build range-extender hybrid vehicles, while the EV category continues the formula-style electric vehicle competition established in NxGV Challenge 2025.

The 2026-2027 cycle drew 36 team registrations of interest across the three categories (13 HEV · 16 DV · 25 EV) from universities, polytechnics, and technical institutes nationwide.

Competition Categories

Three categories, one challenge. Explore each track's concept, specifications, and timeline.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Teams design and build a range-extender hybrid electric vehicle (REEV): a combustion engine acts purely as a generator charging the tractive battery, while electric motors drive the wheels.

The internal combustion engine shall NOT be mechanically connected to the drive wheels.

4 teams were selected as grant winners at the pitching session.

Electric Vehicle

The EV category continues the formula-style electric vehicle competition from NxGV Challenge 2025, with stricter 2026 regulations covering battery safety, electrical components, and the emergency switch. A new NxGV Challenge Rule 2026 regulation book has been established.

25 teams registered interest in the EV category.

Driverless Vehicle

Teams progress through three stages, from pitching to autonomous mini-car racing and finally a hybrid go-kart driverless challenge. 13 teams were accepted into the competition after the pitching session.

Stage 1

Pitching

Evaluation of each team's capabilities and readiness for the Carbot Challenge.

Stage 2

Carbot Challenge

Mini-car challenges using the autonomous vehicle concept, with simulated real driving situations including junctions, traffic lights, and a tunnel.

Stage 3

Driverless Go-Kart

Top Carbot Challenge teams receive grants to develop a hybrid go-kart driverless vehicle for the Grand Finale.

Current Phase

Stage 2 - Driverless CarBot Challenge

The Driverless CarBot Challenge is a robotics competition that requires teams to design and develop an autonomous vehicle (CarBot) capable of navigating a predefined track with multiple real-world driving scenarios.
